Hello and welcome to HOW TO SPEAK CHILD.
What’s it all about then? Well, firstly let me tell you who I am.
My name is Nikky Smedley and I am mostly known for playing LaaLaa in the original Teletubbies. However I have also spent very many years in theatre, television, education, storytelling and indeed life in general, learning how to communicate meaningfully with children and young people. These days I spend an increasing amount of time writing and giving presentations for adults, that revolve around what I have learned in my life of communicating with children.
I am completely passionate about this subject - and after all, it’s something that we all have to do. Whether we are parents, teachers, or just human beings - at some point we will be required to have a conversation with a child.
We’ve all seen, or even had, that cringing encounter:
…..let’s face it, that’s not fun for anyone.
I've written a book, but I want HOW TO SPEAK CHILD to be so much more than that.
I’d like to open up a conversation, and that’s going to initially happen on our Facebook page, and on Twitter.
So if this is a subject that interests you…I do hope you’ll join us.
I publish a monthly blog on this website, and I do hope we can start a lively forum to discuss and exchange ideas and experiences around this important issue.
If you would like to contact me in a more private fashion, please feel free to do so at firstname.lastname@example.org
And if you fancy a little sample of what I think and feel, here’s my TED talk.
It’ll take up less than 15 minutes of your life, and it’s pretty good fun.
With your help, I really hope we can bring greater awareness to the skills and techniques for effective communication with and for children, and in turn develop better relationships with happier youngsters.
I’m really looking forward to hearing from you.
